Meland. I read 12 books this month and surpassed my Goodreads goal of 75 books! I am now on 81 and I’m shooting for 100 now. I only finished 2 physical books and 10 e-books, but they were all pretty great reads.

Review: The Rise of the Dawnstar (Avalonia Chronicles#2) by: Farah Oomerbhoy

30070430

The Synopsis:

Aurora Firedrake returns in the spellbinding sequel to The Last of the Firedrakes.
The seven kingdoms of Avalonia are crumbling and evil is spreading across the land like a plague. Queen Morgana is close to finding a way to open The Book of Abraxas and it’s only a matter of time until she uses the power trapped inside its pages to enslave the entire world. With Avalonia growing more dangerous by the day, Aurora must travel through war-torn lands and deep into the heart of the fae kingdom of Elfi. Her goal is to find a legendary weapon infused with the last of the realm’s ancient magic—the only weapon in the world powerful enough to stop the queen.Aurora might have survived her first battle against Morgana, but the true fight to save her kingdom and restore her throne has only just begun…

My Review:

If you haven’t already be sure to read my review of the first book Review: The Last of the Firedrakes (Avalonia Chronicles#1) by: Farah Oomerbhoy
And definitely read it if you haven’t already also!

I loved the first book, but oh my! this book was even more amazing and now I definitely need this whole series forever. I just got to gush about this ending real quick though! Oh my! The feels, I have all the feels, so many!!! Heartbreak,Shock, Happiness! I don’t know what to feel! All I know is that I need the third book now!!! Oh the betrayal! I got to stop now and actually review this whole book and not just the ending. But Farah Oomerbhoy has written the best final paragraph of a book I ever read! I felt it! I saw it! *tear*

Aurora has grown so much from the last book even though it’s only a few months between. I’m so proud of her. She’s really learning to control her magic and is becoming extremely powerful.
But while she is worried about freeing her mother meanwhile Rafe’s kingdom is getting taken over by evil no one saw coming, so he must go back and Aurora is left with people she doesn’t know if she can trust or not.

“I started sleeping with a dagger under my pillow, and was ready to use it if I needed to.”

In this first book you probably fell in love with Rafe,(I know I did)well Farah Oomerbhoy definitely wants to confuse your little heart in this one. She throws in a new tall, dark and handsome guy. He’s not just any guy though he’s a Fae Knight and that’s not all a Prince. Who am I suppose to love now! Who is Aurora suppose to love!

There is so many twists and betrayals you’ll never see coming it’s amazing. Farah Oomerbhoy does such a wonderful job of building and expanding on this world she created. She has some of the best descriptive writing I have ever read. I love it! There is also a lot more battles in this book and it is all so very exciting!

Aurora really becomes a badass!

“Aurora Firedrake had awoken.”

I absolutely can’t wait for the third book and I neeeeeed it now! I neeeed to know what is going to happen next! I love this world and characters so much I could read about them forever.

Review: The Last of the Firedrakes (Avalonia Chronicles#1) by: Farah Oomerbhoy

25781691The Synopsis:

16-year-old Aurora Darlington is an orphan. Mistreated by her adopted family and bullied at school, she dreams of running away and being free. But when she is kidnapped and dragged through a portal into a magical world, suddenly her old life doesn’t seem so bad. Avalonia is a dangerous land ruled by powerful mages and a cruel, selfish queen who will do anything to control all seven kingdoms—including killing anyone who stands in her way. Thrust headlong into this new, magical world, Aurora’s arrival sets plans in motion that threaten to destroy all she holds dear. With the help of a young fae, a magical pegasus, and a handsome mage, Aurora journeys across Avalonia to learn the truth about her past and unleash the power within herself. Kingdoms collide as a complicated web of political intrigue and ancient magic lead Aurora to unravel a shocking secret that will change her life forever.

My Review:

This book was so much more than I expected. It was absolutely amazing! Farah Oomerbhoy’s writing is colorful and descriptive. I could actual picture what Avalonia was like and feel what the characters felt and taste food I never before heard of. It’s such a beautiful and magical story.

“Where you’re going, monsters will be the least of your problems.”

So much adventure was packed into this book! Aurora goes from the real world to Avalonia, across Avalonia from castles to inns, to fae forests and more! Aurora is on a quest to find her magical self and find out about her real family and of course she is going to make mistakes, maybe quite a few mistakes, but she’s brave and she has little help from a mysterious handsome mage and a few friends.

“With his dark tousled hair, shining grey eyes, and ebony cloak rippling about him as he walked carefully and purposefully towards the guards, he looked like a sleek black panther ready to pounce his prey.”

There is just so many amazing things in this story, but I don’t want to giveaway to much so you can experience all the discovery yourself. There are so many amazing characters as well. Even the bad guys, were written so well. You’ll just love to hate them.

“I had not come so far only to die here today.”

I loved every moment of this book, right down to the very end! Thankfully I already have the second book The Rise of The Dawnstar to jump right into. This is a definite must read and I recommend it to all fantasy, magic and fae lovers!

Review: My Rad Life by Kate Schatz and Miriam Klein Stahl

The Synopsis:

An inspiring, empowering journal that encourages its owners to think, create, reflect, and explore their own radness.

A companion to the New York Times bestsellers Rad American Women A-Z and Rad Women Worldwide, this cool guided journal draws from a number of the “rad” women featured in both books, while also including a diverse range of new women, all of whom come to life via inspirational quotes and paper cut portraits. Blank pages invite doodling, lined pages encourage writing, and a collection of thought-provoking prompts encourage users to get to know themselves better by recording their thoughts and ideas on paper.

My Review:

This is a beautifully illustrated journal full of inspirational quotes from powerful women throughout generations. Some pages even have prompts to inspire you. My favorite is a section where you can write a list of a all your favorite books and it encourages you to draw them as well. There’s all kinds of prompts from lists, drawing a self-portrait, writing poems, looking back on memories, and writing future goals and how to achieve them! There’s plenty of historical ladies and ladies of today like Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Some of my favorites featured were Yoko Ono, J.K. Rowling and Emma Watson. There’s even a section in the back telling you a little about every lady in this amazing journal.

I think that any girl of any age would love this. I think it would be great for pre-teens and teenage girls to help them love themselves and others and it’s great for adult women that need a little inspiration in life or just love to do creative journaling.

I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.
Be sure to check out the book that inspired this journal, Rad American Women

Review: Bubblegum by Sari Taurez

35615310The Synopsis:

Tiana is your typical pampered young blonde with a love for expensive shoes, hot guys, and murder. After Tiana is cut off from her family’s riches, she takes advantage of her talents and becomes a killer for hire. It’s a lucrative business in her country, where a call to the police can amount to a lifetime of debt. Her first client: Julia, a lower-class IT genius, lesbian, and devout Catholic. When the orphanage Julia volunteers at is targeted by the infamous brothel-owner Bobby Nails, Tiana is excited to take the job. But when she discovers Bobby Nails has a full army of mercenaries at his disposal, Tiana wonders if she may be in over her head. Tiana and Julia face an unexpected adventure as they seek vengeance against the elusive Nails. Along the way they are joined by Ruby, a pyromaniac ex-prostitute who catches Julia’s eye, and William, a mysterious acrobatic fugitive searching for his daughter. In the end, will they be enough to stop Nails and the chaos he has created?

My Review:

Tiana is defintely not your usual strong leading lady! She is awful and twisted. But how many male characters have you fallen in-love with a dark personality like that! Well here you’ve got a high-heeled wearing, hot pink gun slinging bad-ass girl  willing to sell out just about anyone to get her way. Did I mention her hot pink gun is named Bubblegum?

If you’re looking for an action story with lots of feminism and diversity, this is the book for you! I could definitely see Bubblegum being a graphic novel with all the “BAM!” and “BOOM!” bubbles! It was just so creative and awesomely written.

Julia, the other main character is a complete opposite of Tiana. While Tiana was all about searching for the next thrill, Julia was slightly more sane and genuinely liked to care for people. The major difference is the class level system that allows the really high ranked people like Tiana basically get away with murder and leaves lower ranked people like Julia wondering can they afford to go to the police for help and will they even bother to help. There actually isn’t police, they are called Enforcers, who will only help if you can pay a lot of money. Which means that the lower levels like Julia and the people close to her can’t pay. So maybe that’s where Tiana comes in! Hmmm.

Despite this story dealing with a lot of dark things like prostitution and human trafficking it shines a little light, and a lot of heavy action on the situations. And just maybe Tiana and her crew can make a differences and save them all!

This book is definitely not boring and is face paced and wild.
This book definitely isn’t for younger readers because of the language and mature content. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to read a action packed, wild, diverse read. I look forward to more from Sari Taurez!

Bubblegum releases October 9, 2017 and you can pre-order it now on Amazon

Review/Giveaway: The Clue In The Trees by Margi Preus (Enchantment Lake#2)

The Clue in the Trees: An Enchantment Lake MysteryThe Synopsis:

Francie’s brother Theo has secrets—secrets Francie thinks she wants to know. But what if one of those secrets is that Theo is a murderer? To avoid considering that possibility, Francie plunges into her senior year at a small-town high school near Enchantment Lake in northern Minnesota. It’s a radical change from her private school in New York, but she hopes to keep an eye on her great aunts and maybe finally learn more about the mother she never knew. A small silver box seems to hold the answers, and she is determined to get her hands on it.

But when her long-lost brother turns up, so does a dead body, and once again Francie is drawn into a mystery. A long list of suspects, with Theo at the top, keeps her head spinning. When Francie herself becomes a suspect she starts to feel like she is walking on thin ice, but it isn’t until she is literally walking on thin ice that the pieces start to come together—and by then it may be too late.

In her previous adventure Enchantment Lake, Francie was thrown into northern Minnesota lake living: fishing, berry picking, lost kayaks and scary boat rides, poisoned hotdishes, exploding bulldozers, a forest fire . . . and murder. But if she thinks things have settled down, she’s in for a surprise. A new school with new friends (and a few enemies), a lead role in a play, an encounter with a giant muskie, archaeological twists, secret tunnels, thin ice, and a strangely sticky murder are all coming her way in The Clue in the Trees.

TCITT-Review

If you haven’t already be sure to check out my review for the first book here Review: Enchantment Lake by Margi Preus

Right from the first page this book jumps into the action and we get to meet a charcter I reeeally was looking forward to meeting! Francie’s brother Theo! Then there is soon another mystery or two for Francie to solve, or so everyone assumes it’s up to her to solve.

“Francie, caught off guard, stared back, thinking,Nancy Drew? Are you kidding me?

Francie now lives in town and goes to school there and meets a couple of new interesting friends that might just have some of there own unique detective skills. Of course the Aunt’s are still in the picture. The story wouldn’t be the same without their quirkyness.

There is so many interesting topics in this story! Dinosaur bones, pipeline protests, a mysterious heist, bootlegging and more! All on Enchantment Lake! It’s fast moving and a fun read! I read it in one sitting. I don’t totally agree that this is Middle Grade, I think it is definitely mature enough for YA and I think anyone at any age would love this if they are looking for a fun little mystery.

I love Margi Preus writing and enjoyed this series so much so far, I look forward to a third book and reading Margi’s others books!

Review: Enchantment Lake by Margi Preus

23508203The Synopsis:

A disturbing call from her great aunts Astrid and Jeannette sends seventeen-year-old Francie far from her new home in New York into a tangle of mysteries. Ditching an audition in a Manhattan theater, Francie travels to a remote lake in the northwoods where her aunts’ neighbors are “dropping like flies” from strange accidents. But are they accidents? On the shores of Enchantment Lake in the woods of northern Minnesota, something ominous is afoot, and as Francie begins to investigate, the mysteries multiply: a poisoned hotdish, a puzzling confession, eerie noises in the bog, and a legendary treasure that is said to be under enchantment—or is that under Enchantment, as in under the lake? At the center of everything is a suddenly booming business in cabin sales and a road not everyone wants built. To a somewhat reluctant northwoods Nancy Drew, the intrigue proves irresistible, especially when it draws her closer to the mysteries at the heart of her own life: What happened to her father? Who and where is her mother? Who is she, and where does her heart lie—in the bustle of New York City or the deep woods of Minnesota? With its gripping story, romantic spirit, and a sly dash of modern-day trouble (evil realtors and other invasive species), Enchantment Lake will fascinate readers, providing precisely the charm that Margi Preus’s readers have come to expect.

My Review:

First off, lets take a moment to enjoy this awesome cover! Next I must say this is definitely a five star read! It had a great story line, great characters, it was even written great! I love this world of Enchantment! A island located in a little town in MN only accessible by boat! I think that little detail made the story even better.

I see a lot of reviews calling it Middle Grade, but I think it leans towards YA with the maturity. I think even any adult would enjoy this if they are looking for a fun little mystery. I say little because this story is a little  under 200 pages. It is packed with so much though and there is never a dull moment! It was so enjoyable, I read it in one sitting.

Francie’s aunts  are definitely my favorite in the story, they are the town goofballs. They are not the only oddballs though, even though the other town members don’t think so. There are plenty of suspects in this mystery! This is a fun read, but there was some serious parts also! Like maybe the deep mysteries of Francie’s past is related to the mystery in Enchantment!

“Seems like everybody wants something other than forest from this forest.”
I have already read the sequel, The Clue In The Trees and I loved it even more! Stay tuned for the review for that Sept, 23rd!

My Review:

Starr Lost picks up right where the first book, Starr Fall lets off. Starr is on a mission to bring down the Organization and she is not doing it alone!

There is plenty of friendship, jealously, unrequited love, lots of love, and some action.

I have to say I love Frank way more than Christian. Christian just seems so needy and overly protective to me. But Starr seems to like those qualities in him. I am Team Frank all the way though. I love how there was more of Di and Frank in this book and I really like Ben and Coda too. Jude gives me the chills and Starr is the same strong willed girl from the first novel!

Di even gets her own POV chapters in some parts of the story. Di definitely is a dark and hilarious character. Someone I’d definitely would have been friends with in high school!

The end has an amazing last minute twist and that made want to read Starr Gone as soon as possible. These books are great, smoothly written reads that I read in one sitting! I recommend this to anyone who loves a good action and romance, contemporary read!

About the Author:

While in hiding, Starr meets dark, moody, and dead sexy Christian Evergood. Cue the swoon worthy music. But it’s not all happily ever afters for Kim. Her NA novel, And Then He, explores the dark and scary corners of the human psyche. Following a night of innocent flirting with a handsome stranger, Tiffani finds herself in the midst of a nightmare she can’t escape. And Then He is available now through Amazon and other major book retailers. Starr Fall, Book One of the Starr Fall series released November 2016 with Inkspell Publishing. As the Co-Regional Advisor to SCBWI Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter, she meets lots of writer and illustrator friends. Through SCBWI, she met her Ink Sisters. The Ink Sisters destruct plot like ninja warrior poets. They make her laugh, especially when she wants to cry. They’re awesome. You should follow them on Twitter: @Alisongmyers  @DonnaBoock
When she’s not doing something writerly, Kim can be found jumping into snow drifts with her three kids, husband, and dog. She’s careful to avoid trees.
