Review/Giveaway: Riverdale The Day Before By: Micol Ostow

banner.png

40151523The Synopsis:

Based on the massively successful CW show, Riverdale, this prequel novel explores what the gang was doing before Season One.

Why did Jughead and Archie have a falling out? What did Veronica’s life look like in the Big Apple? And how long has Betty really been in love with Archie?

Told from multiple points of view, your favorite characters tell their story their way.

My Review:

Being a fan of the tv show, even though I haven’t seen the latest season yet I was super excited to read this book! I’ve always wondered what the characters lives were like before the show.

I really recommend this book for fans who have already watched the show because there is some spoilers of things that go down in the show. If you don’t mind spoilers this book is a great introduction.

The book is written in POV chapters and includes diary entries, text messages and emails between the characters. I really enjoyed reading it this way and I think it made it easier to picture what was happening. Betty’s chapters are mostly diary entries, but it reads like a regular book so don’t worry if you think it’s a little odd.

If you have seen the first season of Riverdale you will know most of the information in this book. It mostly just goes deeper into things of course of what happened the day before!

Betty is in California the whole time and I was really surprised she was in LA for a internship. It didn’t seem very Betty, but I think Betty felt the same way and how everything turns out it makes sense. Except this date of hers, I wonder whatever happened to him?

Veronica is in New York the whole time and we learn just how oblivious of things she really is. I personally hate Veronica because of her personality, but the author got her on point in this book and that’s great.

Not much goes on for Archie and Jughead back in Riverdale except for the friendship change and Archie sneaking around with his teacher. You really get to feel the emotions Archie and especially Jughead feels. Jughead’s chapters were probably my favorite, but that’s probably because he is my favorite character!

Jason and Cheryl were in this book, but not much new information was given. Maybe because we will learn more on the show. But I wish there was some scenes of Jason at home and what was happening there. Polly also pops up a few times in the book too and I liked that.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was such a smooth read I read it all in a day and a half. Could have been a day if I had more time. So Riverdale fans get on this!

Review: Burning Doors(The Extraction List #2) By: Renee N. Meland

Burning Doors (The Extraction List Book 2) by [Meland, Renee N.]The Synopsis:

Cain Foley committed his first murder before he could even drive a car. Not that he would’ve had anywhere to drive to. When he was fifteen, America was one of the poorest countries in the world, and its’ citizens took their hatred of that fact out on each other through gangs and violence. Children that were barely tall enough for carnival rides peppered the streets selling drugs (or themselves) so they could buy their next meal.

Every night on the news, Cain watched as an angelic blonde woman who lost her own child swore she’d end it. She assaulted America’s televisions with praise for the Parental Morality Law: a set of rules that spells out exactly what it takes to be a parent in the eyes of the government, and the consequences of breaking those rules. He prayed every night that she would come and rescue him before his father took his belt off again. Before she could save him, Cain faced a fatal choice: fight back or die on the basement floor. He chose life. Now on the run, he finds himself being hunted by a police officer with his own special brand of torture. Before he can save even a handful of children who have been swept up in the gang life, he must first cover up not one, but two murders: his father’s, and one committed by a teenage madam who is either the love of his life, or his final undoing. As he feels himself being pushed further and further to the edge, he realizes that surviving his father was just the beginning.

My Review:

This is the second book in the Extraction List series and it’s all bout Cane Foley! The dark and mysterious boy that helped out Riley in the last book! If you haven’t already be sure to check out my review of it here Review: The Extraction List By Renee N. Meland

I was pretty excited to have a book all about Cane, because he’s definitely my favorite character of the series. It was one action packed ride that showed Cain’s transformation to the Cain we know in the previous book. While it was a tragic story I really enjoyed getting the history and seeing how he became the badass we know him as. It wasn’t very easy, he went through so so much. Renee Meland definitely squeezed in a long rough ride of a story in such a small book and still it flowed quickly and smoothly. It is full of twists and turns and will have you always on edge.

I was also really glad we got to see how Cain and Jordan became friends and the new characters from his past were also really great. All written extremely well into the dark world that Meland created, but yet it is so realistic.

I loved this book I highly recommend it and the whole series especially if you love Dystopians!

Review/Giveaway:Active Memory(Mirador #3) By Dan Wells

The Synopsis:

Active Memory (Mirador #3)

by Dan Wells
Publisher: Blazer + Bray
Release Date: February 13, 2018

Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

36277567Even in a world where technology connects everyone’s minds, it would seem that some secrets can still remain hidden.

For all the mysteries teen hacker Marisa Carneseca has solved, one has always eluded her: When she was two years old, she was in a car accident in which she lost her arm and a mob boss’s wife, Zenaida de Maldonado, lost her life. No one can tell her what she was doing in that car, or how it led to the feud between the Carnesecas and the Maldonados.

The secrets from the past rise violently to the surface when Zenaida’s freshly severed hand shows up at the scene of a gangland shooting. If Zenaida is—or was—still alive, it means there’s even more about Marisa’s past that she doesn’t know.

And when everyone from Los Angeles gangs to the world’s largest genetic engineering firms becomes involved in the case, it’s clear there’s more happening under the surface than anyone cares to admit.

The truth is out there, and Marisa will have to thread together lost friends, corporate assassins, a gang lord’s digital brain, and what might be a literal ghost from the past in order to find it.

My Review:

“The past is in the past, It can’t hurt you unless you let it. So we’re not going to let it.”

This book was amazing, just like the other two before it! I really love Dan Wells writing style and can’t wait to check out his other series!

Here’s my reviews for the first two books if you haven’t already seen them.
Review: Bluescreen (Mirador #1) By: Dan Wells
Review: Ones and Zeros (Mirador #2) By: Dan Wells

Marisa and The Cherry Dogs are back at it again hacking their way through the world wide web. This time Marisa is finally finding out things that we have been wondering since book one. Why was she in the car with Omar’s Mom fifteen years ago!

I definitely didn’t see the truth arising by the police finding Zenaida de Maldonado’s FRESH severed hand at a crime scene. So Marisa and the gang are on a mission to find out did Zenaida really die or not fifteen years ago. While on their mission they uncover even more secrets connecting her and Zenaida to the world’s most powerful genetic engineering firm.

Along the way Marisa gets a little help from the Mob and her brothers gang which got pretty interesting. Which also leads to more of Omar, which Marisa might start to have feelings for!? What about Alain! We won’t know because sadly he isn’t in this one, but I have a feeling he’d be in feature books. I really hope so! Please tell me there’s more books! I’d love to read more of this world!

“He stopped, and turned toward her. His eyes were as dark as onyx, and she was suddenly struck by the way he looked at her – intense and probing, like was looking at her and into her and through her all at once.”

There’s also some new obstacles
“And I definitely don’t want her to tangle with me.” “The Wonder Mantis”, said Sahara. “The WoMantis,” sad Marisa. ” The Mantissassin,” said Sahara.”
With those names you can only imagine what to expect from that person.

The ending was bittersweet, but I think perfect.

“Be yourself, because it’s obviously working well for you, but don’t be yourself so hard that you forget to be the kind of self that other people need.”

Review: Ones and Zeros (Mirador #2) By: Dan Wells

The Synopsis:

30255941Overworld. It’s more than just the world’s most popular e-sport—for thousands of VR teams around the globe, Overworld is life. It means fame and fortune, or maybe it’s a ticket out of obscurity or poverty. If you have a connection to the internet and four friends you trust with your life, anything is possible. Marisa Carneseca is on the hunt for a mysterious hacker named Grendel when she receives word that her amateur Overworld team has been invited to Forward Motion, one of the most exclusive tournaments of the year. For Marisa, this could mean anything—a chance to finally go pro and to help her family, stuck in an LA neighborhood on the wrong side of the growing divide between the rich and the poor. But Forward Motion turns out to be more than it seems—rife with corruption, infighting, and danger—and Marisa runs headlong into Alain Bensoussan, a beautiful, dangerous underground freedom fighter who reveals to her the darker side of the forces behind the tournament. It soon becomes clear that, in this game, winning might be the only way to get out alive.

My Review:

“Great Holy Hand Grenades!”

The sequel to Bluescreen has surpassed it on a whole other level. Add all the Hacker action from Bluescreen with lots of gaming and one mega heist and you get Ones and Zeroes! Dan Wells really brings out the urban decay and shines a light on living in a corporate-controlled society.

This is the second of the series, but Wells gives you enough information in the beginning to understand without reading the first, but the first book was so good I recommend you start there if you haven’t already! Here’s my review for it! Review: Bluescreen (Mirador #1) By: Dan Wells

Marisa’s friend Anja gets the Cherry Dogs into an exclusive event called Forward Motion. Forward Motion is a charity event that lures the best players in the world to one place. This year, that place is Los Angeles. Which means for the first time, all five Cherry Dogs will be in the same place together! Which was pretty fun! You really got to know the characters more in this one and I really connected with Fang. We both love to stay in our shells! Of course it isn’t just going to be a reunion, Marisa and her teammates will have to risk life and limb not only to access the secrets within this powerful organization, but somehow manage to survive and win the tournament!
“The most important thing in the entire world, in the entirety of human experience, is that you can choose which kind of person you are. I want to be the kind that makes a change.”
There’s a few new characters including a terminator like man called Mr. Park who is nearly unstoppable. Mr.Park reminded me of T-1000 in the Terminator movie. Then there is Alain Bensoussan and his partner in crime Renata. I’m definitely shipping Marisa and Alain.
With a ending I didn’t think would happen, I can’t wait to read book three!
“There are people who matter, and people who don’t. There are ones, and there are zeroes.”

Review: Bluescreen (Mirador #1) By: Dan Wells

The Synopsis:

20499652Los Angeles in 2050 is a city of open doors, as long as you have the right connections. One of those connections is a djinni—a smart device implanted right in a person’s head. In a world where virtually everyone is online twenty-four hours a day, this connection is like oxygen—and a world like that presents plenty of opportunities for someone who knows how to manipulate it. Marisa Carneseca is one of those people. She might spend her days in Mirador, the small, vibrant LA neighborhood where her family owns a restaurant, but she lives on the net—going to school, playing games, hanging out, or doing things of more questionable legality with her friends Sahara and Anja. And it’s Anja who first gets her hands on Bluescreen—a virtual drug that plugs right into a person’s djinni and delivers a massive, non-chemical, completely safe high. But in this city, when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, and Mari and her friends soon find themselves in the middle of a conspiracy that is much bigger than they ever suspected.

My Review:

This book was way more than I expected! It was pretty awesome!

Bluescreen is the first book in the Mirador series, the third book just came out and I will be posting reviews for both of the next books in the next couple of days so keep an eye out.

The main character Marisa lives in Mirador, a neighborhood in LA. In the year 2050! If you love dystopians like me, I think you’d definitively like this one! In 2050 there’s self driving cars, robot servers and tons of cyber technology one of the biggest things in this series is the virtual reality game Overworld. Where all the main characters love to meet up and kick some butt in their games. They also plot  together some of their best plans in the game lobby.

Most characters in this book have djinnis which are basically computers in their brains so they can access things on the web just by blinking! I thought it was pretty awesome. But the scary part is when things like Bluescreen come into the picture. In a world like this Bluescreen is a drug, but it’s actually a virus that will plant itself in a file in your dijini without you even knowing it.

“This isn’t a drug ring, and it isn’t a bank robbery–It’s a hostile takeover of the world’s economy.”

When Marisa’s friend Anja falls victims to the drug Bluescreen, Marissa and the rest of her friends are on a mission to help Anja and get Bluescreen out of Mirador for good. Some of her friends from her gaming team don’t live in the US so they are helping her cybernetically. Which I also thought was pretty awesome.

I really enjoyed this book and all the action packed fun. The world that Dan Wells has created is unlike any other I have ever read. I enjoyed it so much I read it in a day. Even if you don’t know anything about technology Dan Wells describes everything perfectly. I loved how detailed everything was. His writing just flows. There’s lots of diversity and family love in the story as well and I loved it!

I can’t wait to continue this series and see what Marisa and her team are into next and check out some other Dan Wells books!

“You’re going to do what you do best, what you’ve always done your entire life: you’re going to help other people instead of yourself. It’s who you are. I think that makes you the best person I know.”

Review: Royal Threat (Royal Replicas #3) by Michael Pierce

If you haven’t already be sure to check out my reviews for the first book Review: Royal Replicas by Michael Pierce  and the second book Review: Royal Captives (Royal Replicas #2) by Micheal Pierce ❤️️

The Synopsis:

Royal Threat (Royal Replicas, #3)After the shocking events at the Queen’s Foundation Day press conference, Victoria finds herself back in the clutches of her sadistic surrogate father. She’s afraid of losing someone she loves attempting to rescue her, so Victoria knows she must take drastic action to save herself. Duke Ramsey is willing to kill to keep her—and Victoria’s now willing to kill to escape. The events at the press conference also left the palace in lockdown, and Prince Byron has been tasked with eliminating the insurgents. As he attempts to restore order, a new threat emerges that no one sees coming—a threat more powerful than anyone could have anticipated. And it begins with the murder of one of the Queen’s coveted doctors. Clones are going rogue… Allies and enemies are becoming targets…No one is safe. Continue Victoria and Byron’s journey in the EXPLOSIVE third installment of the Royal Replicas series!

My Review:

I’m a little late on my review for this one, but that is totally my fault. This book was fantastic! Once again Micheal Pierce has created another great story!

Royal Threat picks right up where the last book Royal Captives left off. Full of even more action, bittersweet tragedies and revenge. Micheal Pierce had me even feeling for some of the villains.

Victoria is fighting for her life once again while also trying to keep everyone around her from the crossfire. Prince Byron lets everyone know no one will hurt the ones he cares about, especially Victoria. Everyone is just trying not to loose everything.

Full of betrayal no one knows who to trust and no where is safe. Right along with the rest of the series, it is fast paced and full of twists! The ending of Royal Threat was by far the best cliff hanger. I can’t wait to find out what will happen next!

About The Author:

Michael writes YA speculative fiction. He currently lives in Southern California with his wife, kids, and two blood-thirsty chiweenies. When he’s not at the computer, he enjoys spending quality time with family, practicing yoga, playing guitar behind closed doors, and listening to audiobooks.

Because Daisy is more than just any robot–she’s their constant protector, and together the three make a great team. Vick and Tara are determined to stop the mob from tearing their little family apart. And they might just succeed! Sure, the evil Ms. Alba has more robot watchdogs, but none are as smart–or as faithful–as their Daisy. Plus, if things get too dangerous, Tara could always upgrade their pet. With her mechanical skills, she could make Daisy bigger, stronger, and a lot more intimidating!

My Review:

Even though I’m twenty-four years old I still love to read  a good Middle Grade book.
Watchdogs is definitely one of them. I enjoyed this book so much I hope there’s more to come to this Watchdog world. Will McIntosh’s writing was so enjoyable. He gave all the characters such great personalities and it was so smooth. I couldn’t put this book down, and read it in one sitting.

Action packed with heartfelt moments that had you cheering for all the right reasons. Pre-Teens and a little younger will definitely love this story, but if you like fun little adventures full of action, I recommend this to you! There’s also a lot of serious aspects in the story, I think it really shows that autism doesn’t hold people back and can make you stronger than most people. The children in this story are homeless and have gone through some tragedy, but they are all strong and I think can really inspire young minds. It even taught me a few things.

I heard this could be made into a movie or a tv-show and I think that would be awesome! The story is perfect for both. I’d personally love to see a live action movie of these Watchdogs, but I heard it could be picked up by the makers of How To Train A Dragon and you can’t go wrong with that animation!

I will definitely be checking out other books by Will McIntosh. I am already extremely excited to read his YA novel Burning Midnight!
